The River Behind the Name

The Po rises in the Alps west of Turin and crosses the whole of northern Italy to the Adriatic, south of Venice. Po River cruises use only its last, flat stretch across the plain and the Delta, along with the canals that join it to the Venetian lagoon near Chioggia. It is a gentle, rural river of poplar groves, levees and farm towns, far quieter than the lagoon.

Mantua

A Renaissance city ringed by lakes formed by the Mincio, home of the Gonzaga court; a UNESCO World Heritage city with nearby Sabbioneta.

Ferrara

The moated Este Castle and a Renaissance street plan; with the Po Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Po Delta

Wetlands, lagoons and birdlife where the river meets the sea; Comacchio is its canal town.

Farm country

Cheese dairies, rice fields, balsamic makers and country restaurants.

Who Actually Sails the Po

European Waterways’ hotel barge La Bella Vita — a former Po sand barge converted in 2010 — offers the most river-focused week, sailing six nights between Venice and Mantua for up to twenty guests. CroisiEurope’s MS Michelangelo sells Po sailings to or from Mantua as well as shorter lagoon cruises. Uniworld’s S.S. La Venezia is based in Venice; reviews describe its week as mainly lagoon, with part of a day or so on the Po. If river time matters most, ask us to show you exactly how many hours each itinerary spends on the Po.

Good to Know

  • Water levels on the Po vary; in dry years, operators have adjusted routes.
  • The Po Valley can be misty in autumn and hot in high summer.
  • Bicycles and flat towpaths make the Po good cycling country; long riverside cycle routes follow its banks and levees.
  • Bring insect repellent for summer evenings near the Delta wetlands.
  • For barge cruising elsewhere in Europe, see Waterways Cruising.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far up the Po do river cruises go?

Cruise boats use the lower Po and the canals linking it to the Venetian lagoon. Barge and some ship itineraries reach Mantua, on the Mincio, a tributary of the Po. Upstream cities such as Turin are not on river-cruise routes.

Do low water levels affect Po River cruises?

They can. The Po has had very low water in dry summers, and itineraries can be changed, with more time on the lagoon and more coach transfers. Travel insurance and flexible expectations help.

Are Po River cruises good for wine and food?

Yes. The Po Valley is one of Italy’s great food regions — Parmigiano Reggiano, prosciutto, balsamic vinegar, risotto — and excursions often include tastings.
